3-year-old dies after being found inside hot car in Ponchatoula, police say

Police are investigating the death of 3-year-old Jahcari K. James after they say he got into an unlocked vehicle near his home.

PONCHATOULA, La. — A 3-year-old boy has died after he was found in a hot car on Friday, according to the Ponchatoula Police Department.

Investigators said they believe the child left his family's home and got into an unlocked vehicle parked nearby. The child was identified as Jahcari K. James.

Family members realized James was missing and asked neighbors to help search the area. A short time later, the owner of the car found James in the driver's seat, a release said.

Police said temperatures inside the vehicle were extremely high. Family members tried to perform life-saving measures while waiting for emergency crews to arrive.

He was then taken to the North Oaks Medical Center where he later died.

The investigation is ongoing and no further information is available at this time.
