2-Year-Old Girl Dies After Being Left In Car For 8 Hours, Mom Arrested: NYSP

While the Middletown woman was at work, the temperatures inside the unventilated car led to the death of the child, according to police.

MIDDLETOWN, NY — A mother has been arrested in connection to the death of her 2-year-old child in September, police have announced.

New York State Police say that on Tuesday, the Troop F Orange County Child Abuse Unit arrested 33-year-old Zenaida Soriano-Rincon, of Middletown, for felony second-degree manslaughter (recklessly causing death).

Police say the investigation was launched on Sept. 19, after the unresponsive 2-year-old child was taken to a healthcare facility located on Benton Avenue, in Middletown.

City of Middletown Police Department officers responded to the facility and took the child to Garnet Health Medical Center.

State police say that the child was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at the hospital.

NYSP took over the investigation and determined that the child had been left unattended in an unoccupied vehicle for over eight hours while Soriano-Rincon was at work. Police say that the location of the vehicle and the temperatures inside the unventilated car ultimately resulted in the death of the 2-year-old.

The two-month investigation was conducted by the Troop F Major Crimes Unit, the State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI) at Middletown, BCI at Montgomery, and Orange County Child Protective Services. State police were assisted by the City of Middletown Police Department.

Soriano-Rincon was arrested and processed on Tuesday, and arraigned at Orange County Court Central Arraignment Part. She was remanded to the Orange County Jail with bail set at $250,000, $500,000 bond, $1,000,000 partially secured bond.
