Police: Infant dies from heat exposure in parked car; father charged with negligence

HASTINGS, Neb. — On July 28, 2025, the Hastings Police Department say they responded to a call around 5:00 p.m. regarding an unresponsive infant found inside a parked vehicle on the 300 block of South Elm Avenue. Officers initiated life-saving efforts upon arrival, which were continued by Hastings Fire and Rescue.

Police say the infant, a 5-month-old boy, was transported to Mary Lanning Healthcare, where he was tragically pronounced dead. Police say preliminary investigations revealed that the child died from extreme heat exposure.

Later that evening, police say the child's father, Jeremy Hansen, was arrested and charged with negligent child abuse resulting in death.

"This is a heartbreaking incident and our hearts go out to the family, friends, first responders and all those affected by this unimaginable loss," said a statement from the authorities. "We extend our deepest condolences and are committed to supporting those impacted during this difficult time."
