Durham police probing death of 3-year-old found in van

A 3-year-old girl was found dead Monday evening in a van at a Hearthside Street home, and police said Tuesday they awaiting autopsy results to find out what killed her.

Leslie Ramirez was found by a relative about 7 p.m. Monday, police said.

Police termed the case a “suspicious death.” They said the girl was declared dead at the scene.

The van was in the 1100 block of the street.

DURHAM (WTVD) -- Durham police are investigating the death of a young girl who was found in a van by a family member.

Officers responded to the 1100 block of Hearthside Street near Sargent Place around 7 p.m. Monday evening. They said they found 3-year-old Leslie Ramirez unconscious and she died a short time later. Neighbors say CPR was performed but is was unsuccessful.

Neighbors told ABC11 the girl looked like she was left in the vehicle for some time during the heat of the day. An eyewitness said she was outside grilling when she saw someone break one of the van's windows and carry the little girl out.

Eyewitness who called 911 tells me it was a little girl found in van that passed away, says heat related.

Police said an autopsy will be performed to determine the cause of death.
