Child, 2, dies after being left unattended in car in Lawrence

After receiving a report that a 2-year-old child had been left unattended in a parked car, Lawrence police said they went to the scene Sunday and found the child had died.

Police weren’t releasing the child’s name or gender, or information about the cause and manner of death.

Police Sgt. Amy Rhoads said officers responded at 5:37 p.m. on a call to the 3300 block of Iowa, where the child was found.

“Investigators have contacted the family and are actively investigating this incident,” Rhoads said.

The death came on a day when National Weather Service reported Lawrence had a temperature about 5 p.m. of 88 degrees, with a heat index of 96.

The weather service issued a heat advisory running from 1 to 8 p.m. Monday for an area that included Lawrence, Topeka, Emporia, Ottawa and Burlington. It warned that high temperatures in that area are expected to reach the middle 90s while the heat index is anticipated to rise to between 105 and 110.
