Baby dies in Clewiston after being left in car

Tuesday, a baby died in Clewiston after being left in a car for an unknown amount of time, according to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.

We spoke to neighbors Thursday who were near the scene while first responders were presumably heading to the location of the baby.

Senada Gonzalez heard the sirens during the emergency response. She didn’t know what the emergency was for, but she took pictures anyway.

“I was outside, and I heard the ambulance, police and people riding by,” Gonzalez said.

Two days later, she fears police and first responders were racing to where the baby might have died.

Gonzalez and others say Clewiston police blocked off the main road of WC Owen Avenue for hours.

“It’s sad. I’m not too sure about what happened,” Gonzalez said “But, to hear that it was an infant, it’s sad.”

“I think the ambulance and cops left around one o’clock in the morning,” Juanita Hernandez said. “It was all night long.”

At the request of Clewiston Police Department, FDLE is investigating the incident.

Juanita Hernandez said she’s been holding on tighter to her grandchildren since she learned the about the baby’s death.

“I went over there to see my sister, and my sister lives right next to her,” Hernandez said. “And I asked my sister what’s going on, and she said, ‘I don’t know. They said there’s a baby dead,” Hernandez said. “How can you forget somebody like that?”
